      The Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) at the Indian Institute of Technology, Hyderabad (IIT-H) is currently accepting applications for admission into the Ph.D. program in CSE. IIT-H has its vision firmly entrenched in being a cradle for invention and innovation, and has already established partnerships with international partners, especially in Japan, since its inception in 2008. The CSE Department at IIT-H is active in research areas including theoretical computer science, algorithms, graph theory, networking, parallel & distributed computing, databases, data mining, compilers, machine learning, and image/video processing. It has large active funded research projects in the application domains of cyber physical systems, converged cloud radio access networks, Big Data and disaster management. The department invites candidates for Ph.D under two schemes:

  1. Visvesvaraya Ph.D Scheme for Electronics and IT
  2. MHRD Ph.D Scholarship scheme.

The eligibility criteria for both these schemes are mentioned below.

Phd Eligibility Criteria:

1. General/OBC(creamy layer) Category:

    ● B.Tech/B.E/B.S/M.Sc/MCA: 70% or 7.5 CGPA and
    ● M.Tech/M.E/M.S. in CSE/IT/ECE/EE: 70% or 7.5 CGPA.

  Reservation (SC, ST, OBC(non-creamy layer)) Category:

    ● B.Tech/B.E/B.S/M.Sc/MCA: 60% or 6.5 CGPA and
    ● M.Tech/M.E./M.S. in CSE/IT/ECE/EE: 60% or 6.5 CGPA.

The candidates can have a B.Tech/B.E/B.S./M.Sc degree in any branch.

2. Candidates with M.Tech/M.E./M.S./M.Sc-Engg degree in CSE/IT/ECE/EE from IITs/IISc, the cutoffs are relaxed as:
    ● 7 CGPA or 65% for General/OBC(creamy layer).
    ● 6 CGPA or 55% for Reserved(SC, ST, OBC(non-creamy layer)).

3. Direct-Ph.D – Candidates with a B.Tech/B.E/B.S./M.Sc/MCA (without having M.Tech/M.E/M.S. degree in in CSE/IT/ECE/EE) can also apply, provided :
    ● General/OBC(creamy layer): 80% or 8.5 with a valid CSE/ECE/EE GATE score > 600.
    ● Reservation (SC, ST, OBC(non-creamy layer)): 70% or 7.5 with a valid CSE/ECE/EE GATE score of > 500.
    ● For IIT/IISc graduates, the CGPA criterion is relaxed to 8.0 for General/OBC (creamy layer) and 7.0 for Reserved category (SC, ST, OBC(non-creamy layer)). They need not require any GATE score.
    ● For NIT/IIIT graduates, the CGPA criterion is relaxed to 8.0 for General/OBC (creamy layer) and 7.0 for Reserved category (SC, ST, OBC(non-creamy layer)). They must have a valid CSE/ECE/EE GATE score.

4. Part-time Ph.D:
    ● Same criteria as above (please see relaxation of GATE qualification in the notes below).

    ● For Part-time candidates, the eligibility criteria remains same except for Part- time Direct-PhD candidates. Candidates could apply under Part-time Direct- PhD category if they have cleared GATE within the last 15 years.
    ● Due consideration will be given to candidates with prior publication/patent record in reputed international journals/conferences and/or R&D experience in research-labs or industry.
    ● In the conditions above, the relaxation of eligibility requirement degrees in CSE/ECE/EE/IT allows the candidates who had specialized in various sub- disciplines such as M.Tech in Artificial Intelligence, Information Security, Data Sciences, Signal Processing & Digital Design, Communication Systems.
    ● The department reserves the right to set a suitable cutoff criteria for shortlisting the candidates for exam/interview. The department also reserves the right to not select any candidate.

Admission Procedure

  1. The admission process typically consists of a written test followed by an interview.
  2. The department reviews the applications and calls short-listed applicants for the written test/interview. The department reserves the right to call/not call an applicant.

  3. The written test would be of slightly higher level of difficulty than the GATE exam and it typically comprises of

    1. An objective section that tests the candidate's aptitude in mathematics, C/C++ programming and general breadth of knowledge in CSE;

    2. A subjective section that the candidate takes up in one or two of the following three areas:

      1. Theoretical Computer Science - discrete mathematics, algorithms, data structures and theory of computation;

      2. Systems I - Computer networks, operating systems, databases and compilers;

      3. Systems II - Machine learning, pattern recognition, and image/video processing

    All the candidates are required to bring a Govt./College issued photo identification to the written exam.
  4. Candidates short-listed from the written test will be interviewed and the final selection will be announced on the CSE website within two weeks of the interview date. Selected candidates will also be intimated by email.

The following certificates are to be produced by the candidates in original at the time of interview for verification:

    1. Degree / Diploma Certificates or provisional certificates from the competent authority of the University or Institute concerned. (In case of candidates whose result are awaited, producing the mark sheets / grade card will be sufficient. However, if selected, they have to produce the certificate mentioned, for verification, at the time of admission);

    2. All Mark sheets / Grade Cards of your qualifying examinations;

    3. A valid GATE score card, if applicable;

    4. OBC/SC/ST Certificate, if applicable;

    5. Sponsorship Letter, if applicable;

    6. Publications, if applicable; and

    7. No objection certificate from the present employer, if applicable

Candidates called for interview for the full-time Ph.D. program are eligible for reimbursement of single second class (reserved sleeper) train fare by the shortest route from their city/town of residence to IIT Hyderabad and back for attending the interview on submission of the claim in the prescribed format with all relevant particulars (Train No., Coach No, Ticket No., Fare Paid, Date of Journey, Station from and to, etc). Only one claim is admissible though you may attend more than one interview at this institute in the same trip.
